Between these two apps I have been able to completely revitalized my Mac Mini PowerPC. With both Fink and MacPorts you can install and run Linux applications from your Mac. The command line applications have been most useful to me but you can also install X11 and run GUI apps as well.

Installing Fink is really easy. All you have to do is get the correct .DMG file from the website and install Fink Commander from the website too (if you want a GUI package manager).

Installing MacPorts can be a little more difficult. Make sure to follow all of the instructions on the webpage.

MacPorts has a lot more apps but less of them work from what I’ve seen. I was able to install Aircrack-NG and Metasploit2.

Here’s a list of what I’ve installed so far:

Fink:

Etherape, gcalctool, gimp, khexedit, mtr, nautilus, nmap, passwd, pwgen, vim, wireshark

MacPorts:

ntop – failed, aircrack-ng, metasploit3 – failed, metasploit2, bash
