Tips for if your Hard Drive is Failing

So I wanted to write a short article for end users dealing with failing hard drives. This is a list of tips to help get data recovered when you know your drive is dying.

  1. Turn the computer off and do not turn it on again with the drive failing…When you are using a hard drive in a computer you are constantly reading/writing to it possibly damaging it further in the process.
  2. Do not use checkdisk, which is automatically started when Windows thinks there is drive corruption or critical errors…This can actually do MORE damage!
  3. Investigate different recovery facilities **Plug** Try www.MyHardDriveDied.com, this is the company I work for. **Plug**
  4. Be cautious of DIY fixes. Some may work for you but if your not an advanced user you may make the data completely unrecoverable by ANYONE.
  5. Be cautious of programs that recover data. You need a program that blocks writing to the disk as to avoid further damage.

In the end your best bet is to send the hard drive to a company that deals with this normally. They have the tools and experience to know best how to get the data from your drive. Research is key as you could end up paying a lot of money for a recovery. For any other questions you can email me at critchey886@gmail.com.
