Windows Server 2012

So I’ve been trying out Windows Server 2012. As I was able to obtain a free evaluation version, in the form of a VHD. I have added it to a VirtualBox.

So far performance has not been so great. I am running it with a virtual Quad-Core processor with 4 GB of RAM. So hiccups are kind of expected but still facing weird issues. Also, and maybe this is due to my inexperience, I really do not like the complexity of the OS. At least for my needs, which are relative to a small business, it becomes overwhelming. Example: I have been working on the server for a 3 hours total and how found that I’ve made next to no progress on completing the setup. I so far have Active Directory with one user connected to this domain and I still need IIS, some security features, more users, and FTP to be setup. It’s very tedious!

I do however like the look and feel (Windows 8 inspire metro) including in this edition. Really a whole lot has not changed other than the system requirements which have pretty much skyrocketed. I have posted a link below from Microsoft. Though, I definitely do not agree as much VirtualBox barely ran it.

 Windows Server 2012 System Requirements

Here are the requirements for the older versions:

Windows Server 2008R2

Windows Server 2003R2

Doesn’t seem like a huge difference compared to 2008 R2 but when you consider I was running a Quad-Core, 4 GB of RAM and barely able to run a single program. Almost, 100% of the time my entire processor was used. It just kind of seems like a waste for the features you are getting. Once again, I have written this article from the stand-point of a smaller business. I feel like most people will still use the traditional features and really neglect to take in the new.
